April is National Pecan Month!!

Well who knew that April was national pecan month. I certainly didn’t until I read about it today and so to celebrate this nutty month I’ve included some fun nut facts and a recipe.

FUN PECAN FACTS:

Pecans could improve your love life?  If the body does not get enough zinc, it may have difficulty producing testosterone – a key hormone in initiating sexual desire in both men and women.  Pecans provide nearly 10 percent of the recommended Daily Value for zinc.  So, pass on the oysters and reach for a handful of pecans!

Texas adopted the pecan tree as its state tree in 1919.  In fact, Texas Governor James Hogg liked pecan trees so much that he asked if a pecan tree could be planted at his gravesite when he died.

Albany, Georgia, which boasts more than 600,000 pecan trees, is the pecan capital of the U.S.  Albany hosts the annual National Pecan Festival, which includes a race, parade, pecan-cooking contest, the crowning of the National Pecan Queen and many other activities.

It takes a magnificent tree to produce a great-tasting nut.  Pecan trees usually range in height from 70 to 100 feet, but some trees grow as tall as 150 feet or higher.  Native pecan trees – those over 150 years old – have trunks more than three feet in diameter.

Pecans come in a variety of sizes – mammoth, extra large, large, medium, small and midget.  They also come in several forms including whole pecans, pecan halves, pieces, granules and meal.

There are over 1,000 varieties of pecans.  Many are named for Native American Indian tribes, including Cheyenne, Mohawk, Sioux, Choctaw and Shawnee.

Some of the larger pecan shellers process 150,000 pounds of pecans each day. That’s enough to make 300,000 pecan pies!

The U.S. produces about 80 percent of the world’s pecan crop.
Sugar Coated Pecans

Ingredients

  • egg white
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 pound pecan halves
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C). Grease one baking sheet.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whip together the egg white and water until frothy. In a separate bowl, mix together sugar, salt, and cinnamon.
  3. Add pecans to egg whites, stir to coat the nuts evenly. Remove the nuts, and toss them in the sugar mixture until coated. Spread the nuts out on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Bake at 250 degrees F (120 degrees C) for 1 hour. Stir every 15 minutes.

And after making this sweet treat what better way to relax then get in your comfy desk chair and shop the great deals for this 25 L Tuesdays!!!

Easter Monday and Tuesday Ideas

Got some colored eggs around your house left by the Easter Bunny?

After those eggs are decorated, it’s always a challenge in my house to figure out what to do with them.

Here are some ideas for what you can do with them.

Some ideas:

  1. Egg salad sandwiches: Chop up those eggs, add mayonnaise and you’ve sandwich makings. I like to add finely diced celery, green onions and cilantro to give it more flavor. Use more egg whites and fewer yolks for a high protein, low calorie version. An egg white only has 17 calories but is pure protein. Nice!
  2. Tuna or chicken salad: This is a simple salad you can use over lettuce or on bread. Take canned tuna or chicken, drain the water and add chopped eggs. Then, put in mayonnaise, a bit of mustard and dill pickle juice for moisture and flavor. Sometimes when I’m in a hurry, I just dump a bunch of fresh salsa into the mix. It makes a great-tasting salad and the salsa makers already did the chopping and mixing for you. You can also add other ingredients including finely chopped pickles, cilantro, onions, tomatoes, celery and even a tart apple.
  3. Deviled eggs: Nearly everyone likes deviled eggs. Whenever I make them for a party, people exclaim over them. Slice the eggs in half, remove the yolks, beat them in a bowl with mayo, mustard and whatever flavorings you like, then spoon them back into the eggs. Curry powder can also be tasty in this recipe. Sprinkle them with finely diced jalapenos or olives for even more flavor.
  4. Egg-and-cheese quesadilla: This is a yummy breakfast or snack. Finely chop the eggs and add them to cheese inside a flour tortilla, then fry it as usual. This will give your meal a little more protein than usual.
  5. Asian quick meals: Chop them into ramen noodle soup for more flavor and extra protein. Or fry up some rice and add the eggs, veggies and soy sauce to make an entire Asian-inspired meal!
  6. Pickled eggs:Put peeled whole eggs into a large glass jar. Then boil this in a saucepan: 4 cups of cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon of salt, 2 chopped onions, 1/3 cup of sugar and 1 tablespoon of pickling spices. You can also add beet juice to give a pretty pink color, and brown sugar for a sweeter flavor. Pour over the eggs to cover and refrigerate overnight.
  7. Roasted asparagus: Slice them atop asparagus for a low-calorie, low-carb meal.
  8. Potato salad: If you bought potatoes on sale this week, then this is a really cheap side dish: Chop and boil the potatoes, mix in mayonnaise and mustard, and then chop the eggs in as well. Add other fresh ingredients as desired.
  9. Feed them to your pet. Hey, most pets love eggs.
  10. Compost them. If you’re not going to eat them, or you’re worried they’ve been sitting out too long, put them in your compost bin to make some great new soil.

Now that we have given you ideas for Monday….. on TUESDAY you will be free up to shop some more great 25 L deals!!!

HOPPY EASTER SALE!!

I hope that nobody minds my tiny obsession with useless knowledge concerning statistics and facts about food and holidays. I happen to think that knowing a plethora of nonsensical information is an incredibly fun conversation starter, especially in awkward or uncomfortable moments. I’m all for avoiding horrid questions by quickly changing the subject. I mean how else do you deal when you’re at your family’s Easter brunch and your grandmother asks you how your job is going and you were fired the week before? Well instead of bursting into tears or bashing your former employer say: hey did you know that 90 million chocolate Easter bunnies are made for Easter each year? Or that the world’s largest jelly bean weighs over 6000 pounds?? I’m telling you read through my Easter fun facts and you’ll have something interesting to say when you are at a loss for words.

MY EASTER FUN FACTS!!!

1. When taking a bite into a chocolate bunny, 76% of Americans prefer to bite off the ears first. 5% eat the feet first and 4% eat the tail first.
2. During the Easter season, Americans buy more than 700 million Peeps – making Peeps the most popular non-chocolate Easter candy.
3. Adults prefer milk chocolate (65%) over dark chocolate (27%).
4. 86% would prefer having chocolate bunnies instead of a live rabbit.
5. Each day throughout the year, 5 million marshmallow chicks and bunnies are produced in preparation for Easter.
6. 16 billion jelly beans are made specifically for Easter which is enough to fill a plastic egg the size of a 9-story building.
7. Kids prefer red jelly beans and 75% are willing to do extra chores for more Easter candy.
8. 57% of kids get up super early on Easter to see what the Easter bunny has brought them.
9. 80% of parents carry on the tradition of the Easter bunny by preparing a surprise Easter basket filled with goodies for their children and 90% of adults hope for their own Easter treat.
10. The first chocolate eggs were made in Germany in the 19th century and remain one of the most popular Easter candies today.
11. Solid chocolate bunnies are favored, followed closely by hollow chocolate bunnies, marshmallow filled bunnies, and other Easter bunny candy.
12. In the old days pretzels were associated with Easter because the twists of the pretzel were thought to resemble arms crossing in prayer.
13. The exchange of eggs for Easter dates back to a springtime custom older than Easter itself in which eggs were given as a symbol of rebirth in many cultures.
14. The Easter egg roll on the White House lawn has been a tradition since 1878.
15.After Halloween, Easter is the biggest candy consuming holiday.

And to celebrate Easter and Spring that has sprung, 25 L Tuesdays is having a special 5 item sale. That’s right you heard correctly each creator has the option to place out 5 items for this event and one has to be spring or Easter themed. AND all creators are allowed to opt in for this event not just the first 25!!! What a way to get your bunny day on!! So hop on by this special event and get the best deals this spring!!!!!

Make Your Own Holiday Day and stuff!!

March 26, 2012 is Make Up Your Own Holiday Day (and no I am not making this up). Today is Make Up Your Own Holiday Day! Today is your chance to make one up!
Establishing an official national holiday is not an easy process. For example, in the 1800s Sarah Josepha Hale decided that our nation should observe a national day of thanks. She wrote countless letters to politicians, governors, and even the president. In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln agreed to Hale’s proposal, but Thanksgiving did not become an official national holiday until 1941!
To celebrate and help spark your own Make Up Your Own Holiday Day, I’ve decided to make this See How Many 25 L Tuesdays Items You Can Buy This Week Day. So I am inviting everyone to come celebrate this day with me and buy all the Tuesdays items you can this week and show your Make Up Your Own Holiday Day Support!!

“Bella” of the Ball and other stuff

One of bella's original items

Well I am going to try something new and attempt to get some interviews of the creators we have involved in our 25 L Tuesdays group. I make no promise as to how often or who will be chosen randomly but I will try to get at least one done a month and to start it all off of course I have chosen Bella Domela, our 25 L Tuesday’s founder and owner of Sweet Poison!!

This reporter.. (hehe ) has known bella since 2005 when her and I met on one of the very few gorean sims available to role play on at the time. Even then she was a known creator of gorean foods which was her specialty and everyone who was anyone, bought and used her prim items regularly. (yes this was wayyyyyyyyyyyyy before sculptys were even heard of in sl.) She eventually branched out to clothes, furniture etc but her heart began with gorean meals and foods.

cynful Deed: When did you get involved with Second Life and what attracted you to this virtual world?
bella Domela: In 2005 I was invited to SL by a few friends. I had heard about it and decided to check it out. When I got here it was kinda hard to get used to moving around and doing things, but once I figured it all out it was like a big scavenger hunt! I visited all kinds of places and gawked at all the things people built. That’s when I figured out I could build too! It was downhill from there for me and my 1st life!

cynful Deed: what is your favorite thing you have created?

bella Domela: My favorite items change as I grow as a builder. But, my latest favorite has to be my Simple Living builds. For a couple of years I took some time off from building furniture and prefabs (my true love in SL) to work on clothing and develop my skills better. Recently I decided to revisit my love for furniture and prefabs and have fallen in love with SL all over again!

cynful Deed:I know you build a lot but we all enjoy at times shopping and the creativity of other builders here in sl. Who are two of your own personal fav.  designers?

bella Domela: I have to admit that I have this addiction to hair and skin and there are just a few that I absolutely adore. For hair I automatically go to Truth, but I have discovered Wasabi Pills and it is certainly gaining some serious ground.  For skin I have not found a better skin for me than Curio. I love the way it wraps around my shape.

cynful Deed: We love your stuff,  any new plans for the store?

bella Domela:  I am planning to add more furniture and prefab builds to the store. As I mentioned earlier, I have been working on that part of the store. I am sure there will be a need for a rebuild in the near future as well. I have also joined forces with the Cookie Jar recently. It’s a special group that offers some unique events and sales for those wanting to spruce up their homes and gardens. I am super excited about this!!! Stay Tuned! :)

cynful Deed: You are also the one of the co founders of 25l Tuesdays. Can you tell the readers how you helped come up with this idea, when it started and whats it all about?

bella Domela: When we started 25L Tuesdays, we wanted to support our fellow fantasy genre creators/designers. We wanted a specific group that focuses on a popular genre of folks in SecondLife. The economy was not good and lots of folks were using money from SL to help out with RL bills and expenses. We wanted to start a network of merchants and by doing this we could help each other to grow and gain more exposure. To do this we decided to offer quality goods from our store at a low rock bottom price.

cynful Deed:Any future big sale dates we should know about?

bella Domela: There might just be something special for everyone’s Easter basket this year. So, keep your eye’s peeled.
